Last week, classroom teachers in Cortez, Colorado, applied the WIDA ELP Standards, known as the CELP Standards in Colorado, to the needs of beginner ELLs in their classrooms. Working together, the teachers accomplished the following:
1. Identification of the receptive and productive language levels of their students
2. Creation of a classroom profile to use as a differentiation guide
3. Identification of what beginners will need at each grade level at the beginning of the next school year
4. End-of-year language targets for writing for beginner ELLs.
Not bad for one day’s work on the WIDA Standards!
